چکیده

We describe procedures for the measurement of the differential-cross-section moments of the velocity distribution of the state-selected products of photoinitiated bimolecular reactions using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization REMPI detection and some form of laboratory velocity selection such as time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The relative ionization probability of a single product molecule is presented in the form I 1 f ( , , , u ,Aq (k)stf) , where the angles , , and describe the orientation of the product’s laboratory velocity with the photolysis and probe laser polarizations, u is the product laboratory scattering angle, and the Aq (k)stf are the stationary target frame STF differential-cross-section moments. The STF is a reference frame defined by the laboratory velocity and the scattering plane. From the ionization probability, I , we derive a method to measure all five parameters with k 2, the differential cross section, 1/ (d 00 /d r), and the four polarization parameters A1 (1)stf , A0 (2)stf , A1 (2)stf , and A2 (2)stf where the Aq (k)stf are equal to the polarization-dependent differential cross sections normalized by the differential cross section, (d kq stf/d r)/(d 00 /d r) . The five parameters can be determined using only one rotational branch and several experimental geometries. We present simulations that show the effects of product polarization on experimental signals, and we discuss the effectiveness and limitations of inverting the measured signals to the Aq (k)stf . © 1997 American Institute of Physics. Core extraction for measuring state-to-state differential cross sections of bimolecular reactions

We describe a method we call core extraction for measuring the speed distributions of products from photoinitiated bimolecular reactions for the purpose of determining state-to-state differential cross sections. Core extraction is demonstrated by determination of the state-to-state differential cross section for the reaction Cl CH4 3 1 →HCl 1, J 1 CH3. The method of core extraction measures thr...

State-to-state differential cross sections from photoinitiated bulb reactions

We consider a mixture of a diatomic photolytic precursor AX and a reagent BC that undergoes the photoinitiated reaction AX+ hu+A+X followed by A+BC+AB+C. In the limit that AX is stationary relative to BC, we show that the threedimensional velocity distribution of the AB product in a specified quantum state can be related to the differential cross section of the A+BC reaction by a simple, invert...

Reaction of Cl with vibrationally excited CH4 and CHD3: State-to-state differential cross sections and steric effects for the HCl product

The mechanism for the reaction of atomic chlorine with vibrationally excited methane is investigated by measurement of correlated state and scattering distributions using the method of core extraction see preceding paper . Laser photolysis of molecular chlorine creates monoenergetic chlorine atoms 98% Cl P3/2 that react with vibrationally excited methane molecules prepared by linearly polarized...

Direct Extraction of Alignment Moments from Inelastic Scattering Images.

We present a novel means of analyzing velocity-map images of angular momentum polarization in inelastic scattering. In this approach, linear combinations of angular distributions obtained by integrating select regions of images for two probe laser polarizations directly yield the alignment-free differential cross sections and the differential alignment moments. No fitting is needed in the analy...

K S Photoproduction on the Neutron within the Resonance Region

QCD-based models predict many N* states that decay through modes that have yet to be measured or precisely identified. These decay mechanisms give insight into the underlying symmetries of the excited-baryon states. There are competing models for the quark symmetries and dynamics ranging from preferentially paired-quark distributions to hybrid gluonic excitations. Measurement of the differentia...
